Health Program Day

While our day was cut short, the visit to Dartmouth-Hitchcock was clarifying, particularly regarding how stakeholders get paid in our current system. What is interesting is that when managed properly, health care facilities are profitable regardless of a seemingly broken system. My perception was that most stakeholders acknowledge that some changes to the healthcare payment structure are needed. It would be interesting to witness a dialog between all stakeholders about approaches that would work, including the public and private insurance providers. As our new administration takes hold, and public funded healthcare becomes a prominent issue (if not placed on the back burner), it will be interesting to listen to that dialog.

Also interesting was the lack of mental health professionals. Like the prison system, there seems to be a tendency for our institutions and communities to avoid this discussion. As presented, we have come a long way to recognizing how all these issues are interrelated, and we are now proactive about recognizing and supporting mental health. Now our systems need to catch up. This is all new to me, so I welcome more perspective on the subject.
